Unmetabolised Folic Acid

For Practitioners | On Demand Video

Folic acid is a synthetic form of vitamin B9 or folate. Unmetabolised folic acid appears in the serum when the folic acid taken either in food fortification or supplements is not metabolised by the body and therefore elevates as it has nowhere to go.

satisfaction-guaranteed-sealAlthough research is not conclusive, there are studies implicating unmetabolised folic acid with cancer, autism, reduced DNA methylation, increase in uracil misincorporation. It is important as practitioners that we understand the implications of this and which patients may be more at risk than others.

Here are some of the best bits we covered:

 Folate metabolism.
Why folic acid cannot be metabolised the same way as methyl folate or folinic acid?
What are the adverse effects of a high level of unmetabolised folic acid.? I.e. studies show that it is linked to:

  • Cancer
  • Autism
  • Reduce natural killer cell activity
  • Reduced DNA methylation
  • Increased uracil misincorporation

How long does it take to remove folic acid from the body after you stop eliminating it from food and supplements?
Methyl folate cannot build up like unmetabolised folic acid, why is this?
Why is it important to be able to evaluate and consider the form of folate that we use.
